Part A (part éi)
Put the correct form of the verb in parenthesis.
Buying a flat in London
You can (get) a mortage on a one-bed flat with a pretty small deposit these days, but
even with 20 grands in your saving account, you will struggle to get through the ordeal of
(buy) your first property. This is because –as well as being life-shorteningly stressful-
(buy) a flat is also hilariously expensive. Along with the deposit, expect to cough up £1,500 in the mortage
set-up costs and close to £2,000 on legal fees. But the mightiest bastard of them all is stamp duty, a lum
sum that (go) in the government’s pocket whenever anyone (buy)
any property, just because they say so. The amount (vary) depending on the sale value,
but for anything over £250,000 in a decent place you are (look) at three percent, so an
extra seven and a half grand. When you (look) at the numbers, they don’t add up, and
you pour yourself a drink.
