CLEFT AND DIVIDED SENTENCES

Sentences can be emphasized by adding certain structures.

We can emphasize different parts of the sentence according to which element is the most important.

Examples: Vanessa moved to Paris.

What Vanessa did was move to Paris. (What = the thing which / that)
The (only/first) thing Vanessa did was move to Paris.
Where Vanessa moved to was Paris. (Where = the place which / that)
Why Vanessa moved to Paris was because... (Why = the reason why)
It was Vanessa who / that moved to Paris. (Who = the person who / that)

Or we can emphasize the whole sentence:

What happened was that...
What surprised me was the fact that...
What interests me is why...

Vanessa moved to Paris.

Example

I hate the traffic in the city. (base sentence)

What...
The thing...

I hate about the city is the traffic.

It's the traffic that I hate.

Example

I hate the traffic in the city. (base sentence)

the traffic does is make people feel stressed
the traffic did was make people feel stressed
Read carefully and match ideas.
