Third Conditional
We use these sentences to express imaginary situations, regrets or criticism. They are called the 3rd conditional.
Examples:

a. If he had swum alone, he would have died in the lake. |

Past Perfect Would + P. Perfect |

He would have died in the lake if he had swum alone. |
|
b. If he had brought a grill, he could have prepared some food. |
|
Past Perfect Would + P. Perfect |
|
He could have prepared some food if he had brought a grill. |
|
c. If he had been dribbling the ball, he might have scored a goal. |
|
Past Perfect Continuous Would + P. Perfect |
|
He might have scored a goal if he had been dribbling the ball. |
Contractions
a. If he had swum alone, he would have died in the lake.
If he’d swum alone, he’d have died in the lake.

Use “wish” to desire something.
After you use “wish”, use the Simple Past of the verbs.
Examples:
a. I wish I had a car.
Simple Past
b. She wishes she went to the lake.
Simple Past
c. I can’t speak Chinese so I wish I could speak Chinese.
d. It is cold today so I wish it weren’t cold today.
e. I don’t have a bike so I wish I had a bike.
