We use the modals “can, could and may” to ask for permission in a politely form. Depending on the context and who we are talking to, we can use one of them. Let’s see the examples:

Interrogative form

Examples:
Can I
borrow your thermometer, please? (common question)
Could
I borrow your thermometer, please? (formal
question)
May
I borrow your thermometer, please? (more formal
question)
Note: Use “May I” to have more chances for your
permission.
Expressions to give permission
a. Yes, please do.
b. Sure, go ahead.
c. No problem.
d. Please feel free.
